Women’s History Month: Day 31 & Ruth Ellen Church
On the final day of Women’s History Month for 2017, I am featuring Ruth Ellen Church, the food editor of the Chicago Tribune who wrote under the pen name of Mary Meade for many years. She was the food editor from 1936 to 1974. She was also known as the country’s first wine editor. She graduated from Iowa State University in 1933 with a degree in food and nutrition journalism. The photo above is from the Special Collections at that University. I plan to find out what information they have about her college years. I was happy to see this reference to Chicago Tribune food editor Ruth Ellen Church in the book, American Wine. Church, who initially wrote under the pen name Mary Meade, was the first American newspaper wine editor. I am working on a journal article about Church and the history of newspaper wine journalism, based on my Food Studies conference paper.

My Ruth Ellen Church Research
My research about longtime Chicago Tribune foo editor Ruth Ellen Church (pen name = Mary Meade) is coming together. My biography of Church was recently published in Middle West Review published by the University of Nebraska Press. I wrote an entry for Church that will be in the upcoming Chicago food and beverage encyclopedia published by the University of Illinois Press. In the fall, I will present a paper at the Food Studies conference about Church’s role as the first newspaper wine columnist in the country.
