FCA Talk: The Food Section
I had a great time at the Florida Communication Association Conference on Saturday talking about the Florida food editors from The Food Section, as well as a few new food editors who I have discovered. Several people in the audience remembered the talk Lance & I gave at FCA last year about Quilted News.

Florida Communication of Association Conference
Tomorrow I am speaking about Florida food editors at the Florida Communication Association Conference. Here is a segment of the paper: Jeanne Voltz was the food editor at the Miami Herald during the 1950s. She earned a journalism degree from what is now the University of Montevallo. She worked the news beat during World War II and married a fellow journalist. She then became the food editor at the Miami Herald in the 1950s and at the Los Angeles Times in the 1960s through the early 1970s. She later became the food editor at Woman’s Day magazine. She wrote many cookbooks and was considered an expert on barbecue and Southern…

Jane Nickerson’s Florida Cookbook
I have been re-reading Jane Nickerson‘s Florida Cookbook and have found some interesting details. I like when a cookbook author sprinkles details about her life among the recipes. For example, on page 114 in a recipe for Avocado Grapefruit Salad, she wrote: “When I was in college during the Depression, I waited on tables at the formal dinner parties of Harvard professors.” She also wrote about a trip her daughter took and the recipe she came home with. The book is dedicated to her children: Marc, Alexandra, Jay and Rick. Jane was the first food editor at the New York Times, from 1945-1957. Later, she was the food editor at…

BBQ & Remembering Jeanne Voltz
I was shocked to see that Miami Herald and Los Angeles Times food editor Jeanne Voltz was not included in this book about the history of BBQ. Voltz’s story is worth recognizing as her impact lingers. Today, Voltz’s recipe for Green Corn Tamales can be found on the Food Network website with a note giving credit to her acclaimed book, Barbecued Ribs, Smoked Butts, and Other Great Feeds. James Beard wrote of that book, “Jeanne Voltz has written a definitive book on barbecuing. She understands the varying tastes and the techniques of each region she covers and this is THE book on barbecue.” Here is a great story about Voltz…
