Enjoyed this excellent article about the 45th anniversary of the food section of the Minneapolis Star Tribune. I was happy to share my knowledge of food section histories.

Food Editors in The Pecan book
There several mentions of important newspaper food editors in this book, The Pecan: A History of America’s Native Nut. The seventh chapter is “In Almost Every Recipe … Pecans May Be Used” : American Consumers Embrace the Pecan, 1940-1960. In it, the author cites several of the women from The Food Section, including Mary Meade (Ruth Ellen Church), Jane Nickerson and Clementine Paddleford.

Akron Beacon Journal Food Editor Polly Paffilas’ Recipes
I am working on a new project about Ohio food editors from the 1950s and 1960s. One of my favorites is Polly Paffilas. Paffilas retired in 1987 after 45 years as a reporter, food writer, women’s pages editor and About Town columnist for the Akron Beacon Journal. One of those women was Betty Montrei and I just found this image of her in the newspaper’s test kitchen. This is the photo caption: “This 1950 photo shows an early incarnation of the Dispatch test kitchen, where Dispatch Magazine Food Editor Betty Montei Ramsey is preparing a dish. Don’t be fooled by the scene outside the “window,” though — the test kitchen always has been in the Dispatch basement.”

Women’s Page Editor Dorothy Clifford Has Died
I was sad to read the news that Tallahassee Democrat women’s page editor Dorothy Clifford has died. I am happy that I had the opportunity to interview her several years ago. This is the wonderful material from her obituary:“Dorothy Clifford, doyenne of the Tallahassee Democrat newsroom and arbiter of the Tallahassee social scene for more than 40 years, died Sunday morning.” and “For decades, Clifford was the newspaper’s social historian. Most famously, she wrote the Democrat’s weekly “Capital Scene” column — a round-up of parties, gatherings and events laden with bold-faced names of those who attended. Though the term society column might make some wince — including Clifford — it…
