Food Editor Mary Hart’s Scrapbooks
I was excited to learn that Minneapolis food editor Marry Hart‘s scrapbooks were in the American Culinary History Collectionat the University of Michigan Library. I am working with a curator there to get copies from the scrapbooks.

Death of Food Editor Gail Perrin
I came across this obituary of Boston Food Editor Gail Perrin. Here is a segment from the story:““Gail was keenly aware of what motivated people to cook,” said Sheryl Julian, the Globe’s food editor. Perrin, Julian added, “managed to find ways to introduce new ingredients in the market, and explain how to cook things people were talking about. I was honored to receive the Carol DeMasters Award for Service to Food Journalism from the Association of Food Journalism at its conference in Memphis. It was such a great conference with so many interesting people and great food.

Association of Food Journalists Panel
I enjoyed being part of the Association of Food Journalism panel: The Changing Landscape of Food Journalism I was on the panel along with Kim Severson – four-time James Beard award-winning food writer for The New York Times and author of four books – came up through the newspaper industry; Kat Kinsman – managing editor of Eatocracy, CNN’s food blog, with more than 47,000 Twitter followers. Sid Evans – editor-in-chief of Southern Living and group editor of Time Inc.’s Lifestyle Division (including Cooking Light, Coastal Living and Sunset). Charlotte Observer food editor and blogger Kathleen Purvis moderated.

Pushing for Parity at Excellence in Journalism
I enjoyed talking about the need for more women in newspaper management at the Pushing for Parity session in Nashville for the Excellence In Journalism conference. I spoke about my research on three female “firsts” in newspaper management: Gloria Biggs, Carol Sutton and Janet Chusmir. All three of the women started in the women’s pages of their newspapers.
