I am so excited that the wonderful book, Savoring Gotham in now out. My entry is about Jane Nickerson. She was the first food editor at the New York Times & one of my favorite food editors. She went on to be the food editor at the Lakeland Ledger.

Food Studies Conference: The First Newspaper Wine Editor, Ruth Ellen Church
I am virtually presenting a paper for the Food Studies Conference next fall: “The First Lady of Wine Journalism: Ruth Ellen Church.” I just received the email acceptance and am looking forward to talking about the wine coverage in the women’s pages. The first person to write a wine column for an American newspaper was Ruth Ellen Church, the Chicago Tribune food editor who often used the pen name of Mary Meade. Her column began in 1962. Initially, she traveled through Europe to learn about wine. In 1963 she published the cookbook, The American Guide to Wines which included an introduction by esteemed food writer Morrison Wood. I had a wonderful time listening to Roy Peter Clark speak at the Association for Food Journalists Conference in St. Petersburg at the Poynter Institute. His analysis of food writer M.F.K. Fisher’s work was wonderful and a good lesson in storytelling.

New Dorothy Jurney letter
I am back to working on my women and politics book that focuses on several women’s page editors, including Marjorie Paxson, Marie Anderson, Vera Glaser and Dorothy Jurney. In my research, I came across a great letter to women’s page editor Dorothy Jurney from food editor Eudora Garrison. It can be found in Jurney’s papers in the National Women & Media Collection. Dorothy was the women’s page editor at the Miami Herald in the 1950s when she was asked to go to the Charlotte Observer for a few weeks to help improve the women’s pages at that newspaper.
