I have just been assigned to write entries for “Clementine Paddleford,” and “Peg Bracken” for the American National Biography project with Oxford University Press, 2017. It’s now under contract. I initially wrote about both women in the book, The Food Section.

Milwaukee Journal Research Acceptance
Excited that the article that Lance & I wrote about the women’s page journalists of the Milwaukee Journal has been accepted for publication in an academic journal. Included in the article are Aileen Ryan and Peggy Daum.

Repost: Cecily Brownstone & the Green Bean Casserole
Cecily Brownstone was the longtime food editor at the Associated Press who is include in The Food Section: Newspaper Women and the Culinary Community. I think of her every Thanksgiving because of her connection to the green bean casserole. According to a 2007 post from Saveur magazine:“It wasn’t until 1955, however, that the dish’s most steadfast incarnation entered the scene. I am so excited that the wonderful book, Savoring Gotham in now out. My entry is about Jane Nickerson. She was the first food editor at the New York Times & one of my favorite food editors. She went on to be the food editor at the Lakeland Ledger.

Food Studies Conference: The First Newspaper Wine Editor, Ruth Ellen Church
I am virtually presenting a paper for the Food Studies Conference next fall: “The First Lady of Wine Journalism: Ruth Ellen Church.” I just received the email acceptance and am looking forward to talking about the wine coverage in the women’s pages. The first person to write a wine column for an American newspaper was Ruth Ellen Church, the Chicago Tribune food editor who often used the pen name of Mary Meade. Her column began in 1962.
