My Ruth Ellen Church Research
My research about longtime Chicago Tribune foo editor Ruth Ellen Church (pen name = Mary Meade) is coming together. My biography of Church was recently published in Middle West Review published by the University of Nebraska Press. I wrote an entry for Church that will be in the upcoming Chicago food and beverage encyclopedia published by the University of Illinois Press. In the fall, I will present a paper at the Food Studies conference about Church’s role as the first newspaper wine columnist in the country.

Women’s History Month, 2015

I blogged for Ms Magazine about women’s page editor turned managing editor Carol Sutton. I also blogged for Ms Magazine about feminist leader Roxcy Bolton. She was a good friend of Miami Herald women’s page editor Marie Anderson. I will speak about Roxcy at the 2015 Florida Historical Society’s Annual Meeting in St. Augustine. I blogged for We’re History about Roxcy’s fight to name hurricanes for both men and women. Lastly, I blogged for We’re History…

In 1963 she published the cookbook, The American Guide to Wines which included an introduction by esteemed food writer Morrison Wood. She later wrote a book documenting the wines of the Midwest. In 1992, the Midwest International Wine Exposition began giving…

Politicking Politely: Well-Behaved Women Making a Difference
I am excited to announce that I have signed a book contact for my project “Politicking Politely: Well-Behaved Women Making a Difference in the 1960s and 1970s.” This book will detail the relatively unknown stories of two female political operatives who worked behind the scenes with five female journalists to advance women’s rights during the 1950s and ‘60s. The fight for equality that became more visible in the 1960s had a foundation that began in the 1950s. It was a mix of women in government and women in the news media – at times going back and forth in those positions. The book project is based on an examination of…
